Purifier Robes Exotic Armor Review, Perks and Build Guide

Everything you need to know about the Exotic Warlock Chest Armor, the Purifier Robes.

The Purifier Robes are one of the most interesting pieces of gear you can get your hands on as a Warlock. Designed now with Sunsingers in mind, the flaming power of the Exotic Purifier Robes comes not from its damage output, but instead from confusion and misdirection. The Exotic perk works somewhat similarly to the blinding effect of the Helm of Saint-14 and can be a tactical nightmare for foes in PvE and PvP. While Purifier Robes may not get the most love of all Warlock Exotics, it certainly has its moments.

Purifier Robes Stats

The Purifier Robes are all about the Intellect, with the highest stats working to get you your Super whenever possible. As such, your possible stats look something a little like this:

  • Intellect – Min: 44 / Max: 138
  • Strength – Min: 44 / Max: 86
  • Discipline – Min: 44 / Max: 86

Purifier Robes Perks Selectable Perk 1 – Stat Increase

While this is entirely dependent on the roll you get, the swing towards Intellect is much higher than the other stats. For slot 1, there’s a 2/3 chance of rolling Intellect, and 1/3 for Strength. The second slot gives you an even split between the three, with your overall chances still swinging more in favor of Intellect and Strength, with Discipline having a poor showing.

Selectable Perk 2 – Ammo Perk

These perks are actually pre-set on the Purifier Robes (and other Exotic Chests), so your choice should entirely be based upon playstyle and preference:

  • Special Ammo – Carry more ammo for Special Weapons.
  • Heavy Ammo – Carry more ammo for Heavy Weapons.

We always recommend going with the Special Ammo perk. You’re far more likely to get more use out of your Special weapon in both PvE and the Crucible, unlike your Heavy weapon.

Selectable Perk 3 – Elemental Buff

The first perk slot is split up into a “Defense” perk, mitigating elemental damage. The second slot is taken up by a fixed “Armor” perk, in this case, Solar. These perks (both of them) will correspond with an elemental damage (Arc, Solar, Void), but the elemental buff for the “Defense” perk will be different, depending on your roll. This means your possibilities should look like this:

Slot 1

  • Arc/Solar/Void Burn Defense – Reduces incoming Arc/Solar/Void Burn damage.

Effectively, this is just a little extra elemental defense in the face of adversity. Great for Nightfall and Heroic missions if you are lucky enough to roll the corresponding elemental buff.

Slot 2

  • Solar Armor – Increased Armor when using a Solar-based subclass.

This is likely your best choice for everyday usage and for running the Crucible. As you will be using the Sunsinger subclass anyway, this will give you a nice, handy armor boost for taking more shots, letting you dish out more in the process.

Exotic Perk – Burn Brighter

  • Burn Bright – Activating Radiance from death disorients nearby enemies.

A little clarification – by “disorients”, Bungie means that this armor piece blinds any enemies who are unlucky enough to be caught near you when you activate your self-rez with Radiance. Tactically, this affords some very interesting opportunities. When running in a PvE activity where you know you’re likely to get overrun by extreme numbers, having Purifier Robes can afford a certain level of insurance against an enemy horde if you need to make a quick getaway.

However, it’s in the Crucible the full effectiveness of this weapon bears fruit, particularly in Trials of Osiris. Typically an opponent will watch your Revive Orb if you go down, so get ready with the hasty revive and you can switch the tables on them. Just be sure your opponent doesn’t have their Super ready to perform a panic-denial.

The Last Word

In many ways, this is a hard Exotic to judge. Immediately we’re inclined to like the Year 2 version of the Purifier Robes, specifically because it has fantastic perk synergy, working well with its subclass to buff the Sunsinger considerably. The only concern is the rather niche application of the Exotic perk, Burn Brighter. For certain situations, it excels fantastically, adding new offensive depth to the Radiance ability, allowing for tactical options you could only guess at before. However, the Exotic perk requires you to be dead first, which isn’t great.

With a fair degree of deliberation, we’ll be giving the Purifier Robes a solid 4/5 Exotic Engrams! While they may be a niche Warlock Exotic, their overall utility is undeniable.
